A beautiful piece of recycled sari kantha fabric may seem too good for a humble burp cloth BUT it’s what Bangladeshi mothers have used for generations … and it works. Soft for the baby, substantial enough for your shoulder and with 2 small washcloths to wipe up any ‘extras’ the set is ready to go.
Hand quilted together between well loved, vintage sari fabrics is a layer of soft, woven cotton. The result? A practical and beautiful textile to use as a play rug, coverlet, sunshade and much more than just a burp cloth.
Kantha, meaning ‘rags’, is the ancient tradition of recycling well worn, vintage saris into beautiful throws for family use and special celebrations. Using a simple all over running stitch, recycled saris are quilted together. The layers of soft, worn cotton give a wonderfully cozy feel and look to every item made from this carefully crafted fabric.
This kantha item is skillfully made by Motif partners, the young women of A Stitch in Time.
