Recycled vintage saris are cut into ribbons and hand stitched into super-soft 100% cotton fabric by the members of A Stitch in Time. The dashes of sari colours across the soft cotton are like the many flickering small clay lamps that flood celebrations of any kind in Bangladesh. And celebrate we do – every time we get together!
The stitch used to create this pattern means it’s wholly reversible, with stripes 1″ apart made of diagonal stitches on one side and tiny horizontal dashes on the other. Two for one!
The base fabric is an undyed 100% cotton spaced 1/2″ check weave, an ideal canvas for many motifs. The maximum length of a single fabric piece is approx 15-20 yards or 14-18 metres. Natural dyes of indigo blue, coconut brown and grey from local seeds can be used to dye the fabric before stitching, or after the whole piece is finished. AZO Free (non-carcinogenic) dyes are also available for other colours. Dyeing can be plain or done using a variety of hand resist techniques … Let’s have at it! Contact us for details.
1. Vintage saris are carefully selected from the market for quality of fabric and colour fastness. Preferred colour palettes can be requested.
