Description
Recycled vintage sari ribbon is hand stitched into deliciously soft, 100% cotton fabric by the members of A Stitch in Time. The lines of running stitch are inspired by the traditional blankets ‘kantha’ of Bangladesh, where long lines of fine stitches quilt layers of well-worn saris together. In this design twist, the old saris become the threads carefully stitched into the fabric.
DESIGN OPTIONS
The base fabric is an undyed 100% cotton spaced 1/2″ check weave, an ideal canvas for many motifs. The maximum length of a single fabric piece is approx 15-20 yards or 14-18 metres. Natural dyes of indigo blue, coconut brown and grey from local seeds can be used to dye the fabric before stitching, or after the whole piece is finished. AZO Free (non-carcinogenic) dyes are also available for other colours. Dyeing can be plain or done using a variety of resist techniques. Let’s have at it!
HAND SKILLS
1. Vintage saris are carefully selected from the market for quality of fabric and colour fastness. Preferred colour palettes can be requested.
2. Fabrics are accurately measured and cut into ribbons.
3. Large, big eye needles are threaded with the colourful ribbon and 1 or 2 embroiderers precisely hand stitch the cotton cloth.
