Description
This lightweight open weave is created using the skills of the entire community: sourcing and preparing good quality cotton fibres, hand spinning the yarn, winding the warp and weft bobbins, setting up the loom and finally weaving the fabric … oh yes, and then … quality control! For generations Comilla, in central Bangladesh, has been famous for its handspun, handwoven cottons. Thankfully they’ve survived many a challenging time through disastrous weather, economic downturns and young people having to leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Now, with an increased appreciation of sustainable production practices, their gorgeous fabrics are in demand again.

DESIGN OPTIONS: Handspun cotton has its own charm and can be dyed before being skillfully handwoven on a 2 shaft loom where plain weave is the base. The excitement also happens after the fabric is woven as it takes both natural and azo-free dyes beautifully. Tie-dye and other resist techniques yield interesting results and can be applied to either the yardage or the finished scarves, drapes, etc. for a flowing finish.

As we are committed to the Slow Fashion Movement, some fabrics are kept in stock and others are handwoven to order. All however, are transported by sea to leave a significantly smaller carbon footprint than sending by air, and to keep the cost down. When needed, an air shipment can be arranged and we encourage you then to consider a carbon offset donation to your preferred organisation.
